Nasrudin, A Bird In Our Midst
Nasrudin was bought by Fiona-the-all-knowing, who shared my life and honed me into respectability. Nasrudin was free to roam the relative sky of our apartment and lived a dozen years. A gifted singer, he chirped his way to fame on a recording which bears his name, from my first cassette, "Heik Ha Nishtghil?".
He was always pecking at his reflection in the brass tea kettle. He would tolerate no encroachment upon his turf and reigned absolute over the available airspace. We named him Nasrudin because his personal traits were similar to that of folkloric Sufi character, Mulla Nasrudin, who was portrayed so expertly by Idries Shah.
In addition to his mastery of Rock'n'Roll, Nasrudin was a well-read canary.
And well-traveled. His faithful wife, Safiyya, accompanied him on this journey from San Francisco to Pennsylvania in 1988.
